“The wider the range of opportunites we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences.” Loris Malaguzzi, founder of the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy
The Architecture Centre, in partnership with 5x5x5=creativity, seek to commission two artists in early 2019 to participate in their new My Place, Our Place project.
My Place, Our Place is a creative collaboration between the Architecture Centre, creative mentors 5x5x5=creativity, two Bristol City Council Children’s Centres and evaluation experts from the University of Bristol. The project aims to develop and test methodologies to creatively engage early years audiences with the art form that is all around us: architecture and place.
As part of the two-year My Place project, two artists will be selected to work collaboratively with 3-4 years olds in two Bristol City Council Children’s Centres: St Phillips Marsh (& Cashmore House) and Illminster Avenue – one artist paired to one centre. This is an exciting opportunity for an artist who believes in the innate creativity of children and who wishes to artistically contribute to a research-based project evidencing the value of place-based learning and creativity.
Each artist will work closely with their respective Children’s Centre from March-July 2019. During this period, artists will be invited to plan & lead 10 creative workshops exploring the theme of ‘place’ with early years participants (3-4 year olds) and staff. Open-ended and not pre-structured, this commission encourages artists to creatively engage children with their surroundings through any (and all) artform. Artists are asked to devise an expressive art and design programme that will support children’s understanding of the/ir world and encourage them to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings. Key to this commission is a synergy with the Reggio Emilia concepts of: the child as an innate and creative knowledge-builder and explorer; the environment as the third teacher; and of the atelier (space for creativity) and the atelierista (artist educator).
