Hear quick-witted and ardent speakers champion their favourite structure to persuade you, the judges, which of Bristol’s buildings should be saved and which should face the wrecking ball.

Based on the well-known Balloon Debate format, this event will  put our esteemed panel members into an imaginary hot air balloon (a perfectly Bristolian conundrum). The only problem is that the balloon is losing height rapidly and will soon crash because it is overweight, therefore you have to get rid of some of the passengers and regain balance. Who stays and who goes? It is for the audience to decide – a show of hands please.

What must our panel members do? In round one they are tasked with presenting their favourite recent Bristol building to us, the judges in the audience, and we thereby save them from being cast out (or not!). In round two, they must put forward the case for a Bristol building – more than fifty years old – to be knocked down! You, the audience hold the keys to the imaginary wrecking ball! Chaired by Helen Moore (City & Country), panellists include Martin Booth (Bristol 24/7),  Edson Burton (Writer), Elena Marco (UWE) and Shankari Raj Edgar (Nudge Group).

This light-hearted ding-dong of a debate aims to raise the pressure and launch our Bristol Doors Open Days festival to new heights.

This event is part of the Opening Doors to Heritage programme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic England.

This event is kindly sponsored by City & Country.
