Never demolish. Always transform.

The Architecture Centre are proud to present Jean Philippe Vassal of award-winning Parisian Architects Lacaton & Vassal, who recently delivered the sell-out 29th Annual Architecture Lecture at the Royal Academy.

Lacaton & Vassal Architects was established in Paris, in 1987, by Anne Lacaton and Jean Philippe Vassal.

Championing the rehabilitation of post-war housing estates across France, they are known for clever refurbishing and delicate interventions. They reuse, repurpose and regenerate buildings, rather than letting them go under the demolition ball. Their philosophy could not be more apt for our time.

The practice recently received the 2019 Mies van der Rohe Award for their transformation of social housing in Grand Parc Bordeaux. The project gave new life to an early 1960’s housing development by providing each apartment with more space, light and upgraded facilities, thoughtfully causing minimal disruption to residents.

In the midst of a climate crisis, Lacaton & Vassal’s mantra to ‘Never demolish, never remove or replace, always add, transform and reuse’ is a rallying cry for creative conservation.

Could this be an approach to estate regeneration and adaptive reuse that all architects and developers should be embracing?

Join architect Jean Philippe Vassal for an overview of the award-winning work of Lacaton & Vassal.
